Is there a way to use a different symbol for a Check Box control on a report in place of the Box and the Box with Cross?
Yes.
First, create a local variable using Font Wingdings2. Make that variable equal to CHR(80) to place a nice looking check mark when true. Assign that local variable to the check box, and then use the templates or write a condition to test that check box state with your live data.
There are a few other check marks available. In MS Word, select Insert Symbol to see the other characters available in different fonts.
